Travel Thoughts: airports

So this summer I had the distinct privilege (?) of traveling to 5 different airports in 4 different countries in the same day. I flew from Manchester to Frankfurt to Luxembourg. Grabbed a bus home to swap my packing cubes and attend a number of meetings, then bussed back to Luxembourg to fly to Munich then Budapest. Quite a day! 

Here's a few random travel thoughts... 

German airports have coffee machines literally every few gates. Make yourself a cup and pay with a credit card! 

German airports have playground spaces for the kids, which is so nice. 

Munich airport had a robot that had a bunch of cold drinks loaded on, that was just roaming a remote terminal! 

Munich airport has these awesome nap pods you can reserve. It's a giant pod sitting in the middle of the airport, subdivided into tinier rooms. 
Many planes don't have a row 13. 

American carry-on is significantly larger than Europe carry-on :(

Manchester airport needs to learn what escalators are. You literally climb all the way down to climb all the way back up. 

It would be nice to announce the gates IRL. I got an email from Lufthansa announcing my gate 30 minutes before the screens said they would announce it. This info would be so helpful, especially considering how my arriving and departing planes are almost always literally on the opposite ends of the terminals. 

Frankfurt airport sucks. Once again, I traversed the entire terminal. 

When you have to pick between a bathroom or food... always pick the bathroom. 

It'd be nice if delays were communicated. Ran through the airport because the boarding gate was closing according to the screens. Only for no one to be boarding at all. 

Learning a bit of German has really helped me, especially as I can understand a lot more of the airport announcements. 

I understood my first French airplane announcements!

That time I almost accidentally went to Milan, because the gates were right next to each other and it  was very unclear what was happening. 

Finally confident enough in the Lux Airport security lines to take the busses here and only show up an hr early of boarding. Also finally figured out the best bus route to get there :)

Luxembourg airport has this living room-esque area, with these giant comfy couches, a dining table, and a bed (that is roped off) sponsored by a furniture company. It's my new favorite place to hang out waiting for a flight. 

Indians everywhere are annoying. They just walk out and instead of joining the long line of everyone waiting, insert themselves into the middle. And then the same said Indians blocked the aisles getting off the plane. Whenever I see Indians in the wild, I try to distance myself lest anyone think I'm related to them.

I’m on the tram, just having finished watching the newest Superman. My first movie theatre in Europe experience. My eyes filled with tears several times during the movie as I recognized the scenes of my home. Terminal Tower, Soldiers and Sailors monument, and a lovely moment in the Galleria. I gasped when I saw Progressive Field panned in a shot as well. I remember walking on the Guardians bridge in the movie, and my heart leapt when I saw a shot of the city taken from one of my favorite Cleveland script signs. I recognized a scene shot in the lobby of the Tower City mall as well, a beautiful place my family frequented at Christmas. Tonight I miss my homeland. Like a lot. This Saturday I missed a coworkers wedding, where I would have seen so many colleagues who helped shape and build me into who I am today. My 12th BMT birthday

I’m standing on a street corner at 4am. My nose is running and my fingers biting with the cold wind blowing through my skirt and thin jacket. A long bird is trilling a song, oblivious to the stillness around me.  It’s my lone chance for solace for the next week. I read the texts that came in from Heidi as I leave my apartment and the cold and emotions bring the tears on the driveway.    This week.. wow. So much I haven’t written on some very strong emotional events, good and bad.  But this year I’ve been crazy reflective on transplant. I know my brain blocks the traumas and hurt but I still remember snippets of it. I remember the early morning wake ups for vitals and I remember silently lying there thinking. Did I make the right choice? Would the 50/50 chance work? Would I live? And now, I am sitting in a different country, with hair and a life.  Dear N + A, R+U, Wow, what a weekend. I came off a super crazy busy stressful week of work. First in Luxembourg with a groundbreaking for the new building (the primary reason I moved to Lux!), dinner with my boss that night, and then a 4AM taxi pick-up for a 6AM flight to Milan for our first ever client conference event in Europe. Intense doesn't begin to describe it. On my feet walking all day, and standing for hours on end- I was in Milan, but it wasn't "fun". I was going to skip the optional walking tour of Milan the last day, to simply sit for a bit, but as my colleagues had other urgent tasks, I got pressed into joining one of the tour groups. I swear I couldn't feel my feet at the end of the afternoon! Saturday I toured the Duomo, then caught the train to Verona. I had hoped to sleep, but a friendly old New England lady found the seat across from me and ensured a chatty trip.
