Balaton Day!
Today began with a lovely breakfast out. We walked up several flights of stairs to the central square area and ordered. I got a refreshing citrus lemonade as well as a savory French toast. It was kinda like a deep fried ham and cheese sandwich. While it was heavy by itself, it was paired with a sour cream dip which cut through the oil and served with a fresh side salad with a delightfully refreshing lemon dressing.
After breakfast, we headed to Lake Balaton!! We went to the north side, which has the deeper water. The water temp was cool but comfortable and I absolutely loved being in the water. The joyful squeals of my friend's kids added to the atmosphere. I got splashed with water and happiness and enjoyed the sun warming me up against the cool water. I always find water so peaceful and calming and today was no exception.
After a while we took a break to eat lunch from a beach front stand. I tried Lagosh. It is basically a savory elephant ear, though the dough had the texture more like a fried focaccia. It is traditionally topped with a garlic sauce. The kids got a plain lagosh, two of the party got the garlic sauce, and my host ordered me one topped with cheese, purple onion, and bacon as well as the garlic sauce. It was absolutely delicious! The creamy garlic sauce balanced the greasy dough, and the bright onions paired well with the bacon. I also got to try hekk - a fried fish not from the lake, but a lake tradition 🤣 it is spiral cut before it is fried, and cleanly lifted off the spine. The kiddos and I indulged in a swirl soft serve, our second ice cream of the day!
After lunch, we spent a bit more water and chill time before heading home for the evening.
Few things refill my soul like a day in the water and wonderful friends and while my body is exhausted, my heart is full and excited for tomorrow!
it called "lángos" - ;)
