My First Friend

Today is July 4th, and I'm sadly celebrating by saying goodbye to my first friend in Luxembourg. I met W through a women's expat Facebook group. A WhatsApp was created for a book club, and I noticed a +1 follow by an Ohio area code I was very familiar with!!! I messaged her on WhatsApp, uncertain if she would accept or respond, and to my delight she did both. She brought me an English book to read at book club, and we got ramen afterwards. It was a lovely time to get to know each other, compare similar backgrounds and experiences, and learn more about what she loved about Luxembourg. I felt a wonderful connection to her, and loved her adventurous spirit and confidence.

She was also my first dinner guest in Luxembourg. I made salmon and a small charcuterie, and she brought local Luxembourg wine for me to try. We've had a few more wine nights since then, all filled with delightful conversation.

She was the one I called on as a shopping buddy when I needed to find a formal dress for an event. She graciously traipsed through the central area with me, stopping at store after store helping sort out sizes and colors. She gave me the subtle cues that the outfits were outside my price range, and was a hype woman when the outfits worked. And after I had the dress, W came over to my house and helped me style shoes, accessories, and jewelry for the event.

She shared the couch on the opening episodes of Bridgeton season 3, part 1 and part 2, and corralled her partner to assist me in furniture movement.

And we commemorated her last weekend in Luxembourg with sunshine on a beautiful patio with drinks and dinner, and a spritz after-dinner on a different outdoor terrace.

She's the one I text about how to buy conditioner, or if I need a train ticket. She's provided insights onto the people of the country, cheap flights out of the country, and her experiences across Europe.

I wanted a picture of or with her... sadly that never happened. But she sent me a few pics she's taken of me. I'm struck by my smile- I love how happy I look in the pics. I've truly enjoyed getting to know and spend time with this remarkable woman. Luxembourg wouldn't have been the same without her.

Our planned final event never happened, but perhaps that's for the better. Because it's not goodbye. It's a bien tot mon amie - see you soon my friend!
