Moving In (USA vs LUX)

Everyone always wonders the differences and culture shock of moving to Europe. So here's a few things I learned on my recent move.

I moved into an apartment on a 2nd floor (but actually the 3rd, because the counting starts 0-1-2, not 1-2-3). If I'm feeling perky, I walk the two slippery spiral flights of stairs up. I do take the stairs down every morning.

There is a TINY elevator. Reportedly four humans can fit in there, but I'm very curious how large they should be. Two adults and you're up in each other's personal space. It is not uncommon to put your things in the elevator, walk up the stairs, and retrieve them upstairs.

My "cave" (cellar/garage/storage room) has a giant old fashioned key. This brings me surprising joy. Except when I can't find the light switch and the key gets stuck, and then I contemplate being stuck there forever...

I was intrigued to see how the movers would handle the tiny elevator and stairs, but was surprised when they simply stormed up the stairs, and threw open the front windows. They had a tiny cherry-picker-esque truck that they simply aligned to the window. A long ladder was extended, fireman like, and the legs rested on the open window. There was a thin metal platform. One guy simply unloaded boxes from the truck onto the platform, one operated the controls guiding it up and down, and two unloaded everything through the windows up top. Simply mesmerizing! On the move topic, I also had the spaces in front of the street reserved for the movers per order of the police. And since someone dared to still park there... I got to see the Luxembourg police as well :)

I had a number of over the door hangers from the USA. The type that slide over the door, and have hooks on the back. I have single hooks for wreaths, triple hooks for aprons, and multi hooks for the bedrooms. I also have over the door mirrors. However... now I have a pile of unusable over the door hangers. The US doors are flat at the top, but European doors have a ledge, to allow them to close and seal more securely. From a fire protection standpoint, the compartmentalization is great! From a pile of unusable hangers and mirrors... not so great.

Fridge + freezer: they are incredibly tiny here. The end.

There are absolutely no magnetic surfaces to be found. I finally propped my one tiny magnet on the electric panel, as that is the only metal surface in the entire house.

There is no disposal in the sink, which is common.

There are towel dryers in the bathrooms. They get warm, but not warm enough for me to feel like they make a difference.

Everything here is non-carpeted flooring. My feet are cold and I need to buy more rugs. Also, uncertain if my Roomba will work on this exclusively smooth flooring.

The windows all have roll-up shades on the outside. They block the light out quite well, and I imagine have a security component. No windows have screens though. I'm a bit nervous what will come flying into my house.

There is an induction stove, which essentially means no pot/pan I own except my dutch oven will work on the stove.
